Working on New Things!

Hello readers! I have been through some serious life changes but BABY, I'M BACK!

I'm going to revamp this blog in light of my changing life and the changing world that we live it. Still about books and reading but maybe different topics as well.

Big news in the next post...EPIC!

Who Knew?

This is interesting. I was spring cleaning my way through some old emails and came across my login for this blog. Who knew it was still active?

I have still been doing a ton of reading...I've evolved a bit due to a feminist book club that I am a member of. We read books with strong female leads or by female authors, we have wine and snacks too and usually end up veering off the feminist path into other random things...like most other book clubs!

I still read any and everything, so I'm thinking maybe I will start posting again. Some of my reading is complete ridiculousness, while a good amount of it is life-changing in a good way (see The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks).

Stay tuned!

50 Shades?

Ok, so the question is...are you reading or have you read the "Fifty Shades" series? I have read it...yep, gave in to the peer pressure. My thoughts, very briefly, are that it is completely fantastical. To me, it did not seem realistic at all. Kudos to E.L. James on writing a series to rival the "Twilight' series but lets just take a step back and evaluate. If you are Christian Grey who is addicted to BDSM due to your mommy issues, it is not going to take one Anastasia Steele (virgin nonetheless) to completely reform you and then live happily ever after.

Don't get me wrong, I did enjoy the books, it was a very quick and leisurely read. Will I fantasize about meeting a billionaire who will flog me and then have hopes of changing his life and we ride off into the sunset? No way! Besides the fact that it's completely ridiculous, I'm married with kids and live in the real world. :-)
(By the way, I tried to read the first book during a break at work, I was completely mortified and did not attempt that again...that reading was done in the privacy of my own home!)

So, prior to reading Fifty Shades, I did take my teenage daughters advice and read "The Hunger Games" series and thoroughly enjoyed it to my surprise. I believe I will have her post her review on that one...it will be good to get a teenager's perspective.

So, I had a little break!

Ok guys, I think I am back for real this time. I had a few things to work on...if any of you out there have families then you know what I mean. I'm still trying to figure out what direction I want to take this blog. I love to read, I love to talk about it, and I love to write. So, I'm thinking maybe I will read, comment and you guys are free to leave your comments as well.

If anyone out there has book suggestions, I am all ears! I have done a ton of reading over the summer and I'm ready to get back in discussion mode. My 13 year old daughter has been doing a lot of reading too and she may guest post on here occasionally as well.

Back from Jamaica!

Hello All,
I am officially back to real life now...while my time in Jamaica was wonderful, it is back to reality...kids who have camp, need money for sports fees and bills, bills, bills! At least I have my reading, right? Ah well...it is what it is.

So, I have also discovered that there is another "Read is the New Black" blog out there...mine was created first, this poacher didn't start hers until March and if you all will notice, mine has been around since around October/November-ish (which is when I started the physical book club itself). So, please disregard the imposter site, even though hers is a bit more professional than mine! *Hey, I'm big enough to admit it...tehe!

Back to reading...I have finished reading Comfort Food by Kate Jacobs and on my next post will hand out your wonderful assignment of discussion questions. I will say that I was not very impressed with this book. I hate when books start off so slow that I have to work to get into the story and then have the story be mediocre, at best...more about that later though. Continue with your summer reading and I will continue with my sporadic posts while trying to recover from my vacation!
